Oil producers and consumers have long sought to defend their own interests by setting up various bodies and discussion groups. The following is a list of some of the initiatives undertaken by both sides. • The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) was created in 1960 by five founder members Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. They were seeking to defend the interests of producer countries against international oil companies.
