TransCanada profit soars

Power and pipeline company TransCanada Corp. has reported a profit of $449-million or 83 cents a share for the first quarter of 2008, well up from $265-million or 52 cents a year earlier, although the latest performance included $123-million in non-recurring gains. Netting out the unusual items in both years, the Calgary company delivered “comparable earnings” of $326-million or 60 cents, compared with $250-million or 52 cents, it said Friday, before stock markets opened.
