Lear closing Windsor auto parts plant

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Automotive seat maker Lear Corp. will close a plant in Windsor, Ont., the Canadian Auto Workers union announced Tuesday, another blow to a city that has already seen major job cuts from Ford Motor Co.

The move will eliminate more than 160 jobs, the union said. Workers manufacture seats that go into the Buick Lucerne sedan sold by General Motors Corp.

“Lear's announcement today is another example of the devastating closures that continue to rip through the auto parts, auto assembly and manufacturing sectors,” CAW president said in a statement.

The closing is scheduled for June, 2008, and follows a series of shutdowns of auto parts plants that have rippled through the centre of Canada's auto parts making in southwestern Ontario.
