MONTREAL — — Mega Brands Inc. plans to start selling its Micro and Mini Mega Bloks in the Netherlands after an appeal court overturned a 2005 lower-court ruling which had been won by Lego System AS.
Mega Brands said Monday the issue remains subject to an appeal to the Dutch Supreme Court, but it will sell its full line of construction toys in the Netherlands immediately.
“Our Mega Bloks preschool toys have already gained a loyal customer base in the Netherlands and this legal development will allow us to serve Dutch consumers and retailers even better,” said Marc Bertrand, president and chief executive officer of Mega Brands.
In the 2005 decision, the lower court found that the Mega Bloks products, essentially identical to Lego blocks, represented unfair competition and would confuse consumers.
