Calgary — Sporting goods store operator Forzani Group Ltd. reported Friday a second-quarter profit of $1.9-million compared to a loss in the same period a year earlier of $2.3-million on improved revenues and a revitalization of some stores.

The Calgary-based retailer said profit amounted to six cents per diluted share, including the effect of a one cent per share charge against earnings related to income tax expense, up from a year-earlier loss of seven cents per share.

Revenue for the three months ended July 30 was $284-million, up from a year-earlier $243.6-million.

Same-store sales at Forzani's corporate locations were up 5.4 per cent and up 6.9 per cent at its franchise locations. The group's overall same-store sales increased six per cent, year-over-year.

Shares in Forzani were down 24 cents at $16.60 in morning trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
