Bank of Canada to set rates independent of Fed

13/03/08

TORONTO (Reuters) - The Bank of Canada will set interest rates appropriately for Canada, regardless of what the U.S. Federal Reserve does with its key rate, Governor Mark Carney said on Thursday.

"We will set monetary policy consistent with conditions in Canada," Carney said in a question and answer session after a speech to the Toronto Board of Trade. "We have a very clear target and we intend to meet that target."

Carney added that whatever the Fed does will be for a reason and the Bank of Canada will factor those reasons into its deliberations.
