12:16 EST Friday, November 21, 2008

Unique lighting exchange offered to first 500 ZooLights visitors on Nov. 28

CHICAGO, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- ComEd is brightening the holidays and encouraging customers to adopt energy-saving habits with its sponsorship of a unique lighting exchange and a number of festivals across northern Illinois this season.

ComEd will host an energy efficient holiday lighting exchange on Nov. 28 at Lincoln Park Zoo's annual ZooLights festival. From 5:30 to 8 p.m. ComEd will offer the first 500 people two sets of energy efficient LED (light emitting diode) lights, if they trade in two sets of traditional incandescent holiday light strands. ComEd will sponsor a second holiday light trade-in at the Museum of Science and Industry on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"This is the seventh consecutive year ComEd has partnered with the Lincoln Park Zoo and proudly sponsored ZooLights," said Val Jensen, vice president, Marketing and Environmental Programs, ComEd. "Traditions such as this provide an opportunity to celebrate the season and highlight energy conservation, by encouraging use of festive lighting that is also frugal."

Encouraging use of LEDs is one of ComEd's 12 Ways to Green, which aims to educate customers about energy efficiency to save money and to reduce their carbon footprint. LED holiday lights can pay for themselves in four to five years as a result of electricity savings and use up to 90 percent less energy than traditional light strands. LED holiday lighting also is very weather resistant, durable for outdoor use and comes in a variety of colors. Through Dec. 31, ComEd is promoting a 20 percent discount on each set of energy efficient holiday lights customers purchase via its Online Energy Store at ComEd.com.

In addition to offering LED lighting exchanges and discounts, ComEd continues its tradition of hosting local holiday festivals for families to enjoy:
