Mediaset sues YouTube with copyright infringement

AP

Mediaset SpA, the media empire founded by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, said yesterday it was seeking at least €500-million ($796-million) in damages against Google Inc.'s YouTube unit for allegedly misusing video produced by Mediaset. In a lawsuit filed with Rome civil court, Mediaset said it had identified on YouTube at least 4,643 video clips of Mediaset-owned material that was available on June 10 alone after being posted "without obtaining rights." YouTube maintains it obeys the law by removing any copyrighted content after being notified of a violation by the copyright owner. MS (Milan) rose 21 euro cents to €4.78. GOOG (Nasdaq) fell 41 cents (U.S.) to $482.70.
