WINNIPEG, July 11 /CNW/ - Winnipeg businessman Jim Gauthier and his spouse Joyce Gauthier today announced a $1 million donation to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. "This Museum will not only ensure a better future for our city," he said as he and Joyce presented the cheque to Babs Asper (Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights Board Member) and Gail Asper (Campaign Chair, Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights), "It will ensure a better future for all humanity."
"Jim is a true visionary," said Gail Asper. "He fully understands the integral role this Museum will play in the economic and 'spiritual' rejuvenation of Manitoba. If anyone personifies a dream-big and can-do attitude, it's Jim Gauthier. We're thrilled by his generous donation to the Museum. And I'm here to say, everyone LOVES a Gauthier deal!"
"Winnipeg has been very good to me and my family," said Gauthier. "Joyce and I strongly believe in giving back to our community. Donating to this Museum allows us to do so while at the same time, giving us the opportunity to do something meaningful and significant for the world community."
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights has been established as a national museum by the Government of Canada. It will be the first national museum to be built outside the National Capital Region (in Winnipeg) and the first national museum to be created in 41 years. The Museum, a $265 million project, also has significant funding support from the Province of Manitoba, the City of Winnipeg, and the private sector including several corporations, labour groups, associations, foundations and private donors from across Canada. To date more than 3,000 individual gifts have been received. The Museum also has the support of 50 ethno-cultural and human rights groups from across the nation.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights will explore the subject of human rights in order to enhance people's understanding of human rights, promote respect for others and encourage reflection and dialogue.
"We are particularly thrilled with the potential of this Museum to reach young people. It is our intent to create a legacy for our grandchildren. This one will pay dividends for decades to come," said Gauthier.

Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is the non-profit registered charity tasked with raising private sector funding for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. This donation brings the total raised from the private sector to $94.5 million.
