Investment Will Benefit Drivers In Hamilton

HAMILTON, ON, Oct. 24 /CNW/ - The Ontario government is upgrading Highway 403 near Hamilton to improve safety and driving conditions, Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield announced today.

"Highway 403 carries up to 85,000 vehicles a day between Wilson Street and King Street. This highway is an important link to the London area as well as a critical link to the Hamilton International Airport," said Cansfield.

The Highway 403 project extends 12.5 kilometres from Wilson Street east in Ancaster to King Street within the City of Hamilton. Work includes:

    <<
    - Repaving 7.3 kilometres of Highway 403 from just east of Lincoln
Alexander Parkway (LINC) to Wilson Street to make the drive smoother
    - Improving lighting between the LINC and Highway 6 South to improve
        safety
    - New traffic signals at the Wilson Street north ramp intersection and
new overhead signs at seven locations to improve safety
    - Two new noise barriers east of Hamilton Drive and just west of the
Highway 6 South Interchange to reduce noise
    - Replacing steel guiderail with a concrete barrier just east of the
        LINC to improve safety
    - Repainting of lines and repaving along the 403 eastbound lanes near
Main Street and Longwood Road curves to improve safety.

The $12.2 million improvement project is expected to be complete by summer 2007. Lafarge Canada Inc. of Hamilton was awarded this project. Traffic impacts will be minimized with most of the work occuring at night when Highway 403 will be reduced to a single-lane in each direction.

"This is great news for area drivers," said MPP for Hamilton-West Judy Marsales. "It's great to see our government investing in our area as part of its $3.4 billion Southern Ontario Highway Program."

"I've been working a long time encouraging these improvements and I'm delighted to see they are here," said MPP for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Aldershot Ted McMeekin.

To ensure a strong economy and high quality of life for Ontario's families, this government is investing:

    <<
    - $30 billion plus over five years in the ReNew Ontario infrastructure
investment plan, to deliver better hospitals, schools, transit
systems, border crossings, roads and bridges - all necessary for
        future growth and prosperity
    - $3.4 billion over five years in the Southern Ontario Highway Program,
to expand 130 kilometres of highways, construct 64 bridges, repair
1,600 kilometres of highways and 200 bridges across southern Ontario
    - More than $1.4 billion over five years from provincial gas tax
funding into municipalities for new streetcars, buses and transit
        routes across Ontario.
