FBU Invites South Yorkshire Fire Authority to Talks at Lunchtime Today, Opens Possibility of Today's Strike Being Halted

03:04 EST Wednesday, November 04, 2009

SOUTH YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND--(Marketwire - Nov. 4, 2009) - The Fire Brigades Union has invited South Yorkshire fire service to talks at noon today opening the possibility that this evening's strike could be halted. The talks are scheduled to start at noon, at Wortley Hall, Wortley, near Sheffield.

The union has offered to put on transport and a working lunch to ensure the talks can start on time. The move comes following some informal discussions.

The fire authority has now accepted the union's offer of external assistance made at those informal discussions.

Ian Murray, FBU regional secretary said: "We've cleared the decks and are ready to get down to immediate talks starting at noon today and earlier if at all possible. The next strike starts at 4pm this evening, but there is time to call that strike off if we make the necessary progress.

"We look forward to meeting with the fire service this afternoon. The union has put on transport and a working lunch so there is no delay to getting moving towards an agreement."
