Alcan sells plastics unit


Aluminum giant Alcan Inc. said it has agreed to sell some of its plastic bottle operations to Ball Corp. for $180-million US.

The assets to be sold include operations in Batavia, Ill., Bellevue, Ohio, Newark, Calif. and Brampton, Ont., employing about 470 people.

“With this sale, Alcan Packaging takes another significant step in our continued strategy of focusing resources on markets where we enjoy scale and leadership positions,” said Christel Bories, president and chief executive officer of the company's packaging division.

Alcan employs about 70,000 people and has operating facilities in 55 countries and regions.
