PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Executive Committee of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution today fully endorsing Greater Philadelphia's proposed bid to land the 2016 Olympic Games.
"Time after time, Greater Philadelphia has proven that it can easily support large scale events like the 2000 Republican National Convention, Live 8, the X Games, and the President's Summit for America's Future just to name just a few," said Mark S. Schweiker, President & CEO, Greater Philadelphia. "This region already has 90 percent of the venues needed for Olympic contests. We have the infrastructure, we're passionate about sports, and our region can attract a large live-gate and television audience. This would be a tremendous opportunity for Greater Philadelphia and we can practically guarantee both the U.S. Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee that we can be great hosts and stage the most successful games ever."
Citing Greater Philadelphia's world-class facilities such as its sports complex in South Philadelphia, lodging, restaurants, cultural attractions and transportation system, the Chamber believes the region has an excellent chance to become an Olympic city, which would mean a tremendous economic windfall for the region and raise Greater Philadelphia's stature internationally.
"Bidding for the Olympics is something that we can and should do," said Stephen D. Steinour, Chairman, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. "It's time that Greater Philadelphia realizes its potential for greatness and establishes itself as one of the world's premier cities. I am confident that we can make a stronger case than any other region for hosting the Olympics and we will succeed."
