Tembec to idle sawmills in Ontario, B.C.

CP

Hundreds of additional forestry workers in Ontario and British Columbia will be out of work this summer after Quebec-based Tembec Inc. TMB-T announced it will temporarily idle all of its Northern Ontario and some B.C. sawmills because of poor market conditions and the rising dollar. About 500 people at the Ontario mills will be affected by the shutdowns. The Kapuskasing mill will close for a week beginning July 6; the Chapleau sawmill will go down for three weeks beginning June 29; and the Cochrane and Hearst sawmills will each go down for six weeks beginning June 22 and July 6. Tembec also confirmed that B.C. sawmills at Elko and Canal Flats will be idled for at least three weeks, starting Monday. TMB (TSX) rose 5¢ to $65¢.
