POINTE-A-LA-CROIX, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 14, 2005) - On behalf of the Honourable Stephane Dion, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Mr. Jean-Claude D'Amours, Member of Parliament for Madawaska-Restigouche, took part today in the unveiling of a scale model of the French Frigate Le Machault as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations at the Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site of Canada.
"By relating a little-known event in the history of Canada, the Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site demonstrates the importance of our network of historic sites in keeping history alive," said Minister Dion.
The Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site of Canada tells the story of the last naval battle to take place between France and England for the possession of North America. This confrontation, which ended on July 8, 1760, sealed forever the fate of New France.
"I am pleased to take part in the unveiling of this model of Le Machault. The Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site can be proud of this new acquisition, which will be most valuable in helping to fulfill the site's mission of educating and raising awareness among the public about this important event in Canada's history," said Mr. D'Amours.
The frigate Le Machault was part of the rescue force sent by France to retake Quebec, which had been seized by the Britishin 1759. Authentic sections of the vessel and an impressive collection of archaeological artifacts are on display in the interpretation centre at the Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site.
The Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site of Canada is part of Parks Canada's network of national historic sites and national parks in Quebec, which offer Canadians as well as visitors from other countries first-class visitor facilities and exceptional heritage experiences.
