SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Business Wire) -- The Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance (SARTA) released the names of the 50 technology companies listed on the Q1 2005 SARTA Technology Index(TM).
This is the eighth consecutive quarter that SARTA has released the Tech Index(TM), which lists both the leading public and private technology companies headquartered in the nine-county greater Sacramento region, along with their aggregate economic, geographic and industry data. High technology and life science companies headquartered in Butte, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, Solano, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba counties are eligible for inclusion in the Index.
Although the Tech Index leveled off this quarter, because of pullbacks by publicly-held companies, private companies on the Index showed growth. The Index moved from 154.15 last quarter to 155.03 this quarter -- a .6 percent increase.
In the private companies category, equity investment in the region's high tech companies increased by 88.6 percent, a $16 million quarter-over-quarter additional growth. Number of employees moved up by 2.4 percent and revenue increased by 3.2 percent. In addition, market caps within the public companies sector leveled off at roughly $2 billion, down 2.1 percent from the previous quarter.
The Tech Index has shown very healthy growth since its inception in 2003. Index value has climbed steadily since the second quarter of 2003, with both private and public company categories showing significant growth.
"Unlike other financial indices, the SARTA Tech Index is unique in that it was developed to measure the performance of both publicly held and private regional technology and life science companies," said Oleg Kaganovich, SARTA's CEO. "It's an important vehicle for tracking our regional tech economy's health and investment potential, which will continue to increase the level of venture funding and jobs coming to the greater Sacramento area."
Index company Digital Path Networks in Chico was replaced by Helm Solutions Group, a collective bargaining enterprise software company based in El Dorado Hills, which jumped from the Companies to Watch list to the Tech Index this quarter. And Convergent Logic, a sales automation software start-up based in Roseville, made its debut on the Companies to Watch list. In addition, ECHO Technologies Corporation in Folsom came off of the Companies to Watch list.
Also new to the Tech Index this quarter was SARTA's TechTRAQ software, which has completely automated the Tech Index application and reporting process. Grant funding provided by PG&E helped make the development of the TechTRAQ software Beta version possible.
SARTA operates the SARTA Tech Index(TM) with the assistance of the Sacramento Technology Practice of Ernst & Young, LLP, and also receives ongoing support from Deloitte & Touche. Through the Index, SARTA monitors the growing tech sector in the greater Sacramento nine-county area, and identifies companies demonstrating success and strong business models. The SARTA Tech Index(TM) is one of SARTA's flagship programs helping the organization fulfill its vision to attract $1 billion in investment capital to the region by the end of 2010.

As part of its mission to foster high tech entrepreneurial growth and attract private investment capital to the greater Sacramento region, SARTA has developed an innovative tool, the SARTA Technology Index,(TM) to monitor the health and status of the region's technology sector.
