Who: Pennsylvania's small and rural hospitals

The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) will release specific data showing how small and rural hospitals are a primary economic driver throughout the state. Statewide, Pennsylvania's hospitals annually contribute more than $33.9 billion to the state's economy. The hospital state budget cuts reach deep into this and other communities that depend on the services hospitals provide and the economic benefits associated with hospitals.

Participants in this announcement will include: Carolyn F. Scanlan, president and chief executive officer, The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania; David Acker, chief executive officer, Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport; and Kent Hess, president and chief executive officer, Clearfield Hospital.

The call is designed for the media to:

-- Gather information on the economic impact of small and rural hospitals
       across Pennsylvania-both directly and indirectly.
-- Understand the effects of the hospital state budget cuts on small and
       rural hospitals across Pennsylvania.
-- Ask questions about the impact these cuts will have on their local
       hospitals and the public.

HAP encourages health care and business reporters to participate.

Media is asked to register prior to the "virtual" press conference to ensure that enough conference lines are available, though registration is not required to participate. To register send an email at ekiehl@haponline.org, by 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 24, 2003 with your name, affiliation, and phone number.
