TORONTO, Dec. 8 /CNW/ - Leading the Canadian nominations for the 48th Annual GRAMMY(R) Awards, announced today at Gotham Hall in New York City are: Daniel Lanois ("Agave" - Best Pop Instrumental Performance; "Belladonna" - Best Pop Instrumental Album and "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (U2) - Co-Producer), Arcade Fire ("Funeral" - Best Alternative Music Album; "Cold Wind" - Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media) and Neil Young ("The Painter" - Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance; "Prairie Wind" - Best Rock Album). Also with one nomination each are: David Foster ("Can't Buy Me Love" - Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist), Michael Buble ("It's Time" - Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album), Fresh I.E. ("Truth Is Fallin' In The Streetz" - Best Rock Gospel Album), Galt MacDermott ("Hair" - Best Musical Show Album), Sarah McLachlan ("World On Fire" - Best Short Form Music Video), Rick Moranis (The Agoraphobic Cowboy" - Best Comedy Album), and Walter Ostanek ("Time Out For Polkas and Waltzes" - Best Polka Album).

On hand in New York City today to read the nominations was Nickelback's Chad Kroeger.
Topping the 48th Annual GRAMMY(R) nominations are Mariah Carey, John Legend and Kanye West with eight nominations; 50 Cent, Beyonce Knowles and Stevie Wonder with six each; and Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Gwen Stefani and U2 each with five. The 48th Annual GRAMMY(R) Awards will be broadcast live, from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, on the GLOBAL TELEVISION NETWORK, Wednesday, February 8, 2006, at 8:00pm ET/PT, with a special pre-GRAMMY(R) program beginning at 7:00pm ET/PT. The GRAMMY(R) Awards reaches a worldwide audience of hundreds of millions in 75 countries. Alfred Haber Inc. is the international distributor.
Eligibility period for 48th Annual GRAMMY(R) Awards nominations was for recordings released in general distribution from October 1, 2004 to September 30, 2005. The official GRAMMY(R) Nominees compilation CD will be available in Canada in late January 2006.
Last night in New York City, Toronto-born music composer Howard Shore was recognized with the Recording Academy Honors award "for work which embodies excellence and integrity and has improved the environment for the creative community". Other recipients were Mariah Carey, Yoko Ono & John Lennon and Jay-Z. Winner of three Oscars, four GRAMMY Awards and three Golden Globe Awards, Shore's more than 60 film credits include The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Philadelphia, Silence of the Lambs, The Aviator, Mrs. Doubtfire and A History of Violence.
Also, on February 6, 2006 in Los Angeles, multi-GRAMMY(R) award-winning James Taylor will be honoured as the MusiCares 2006 Person of the Year, at a special tribute dinner, concert and silent auction.
